Marine Fish

Animal Kingdom’s Guideline’s for your Marine Aquarium

These guidelines are to ensure that the fish bought from us are given every chance of survival in your home aquarium.

Acclimatising your new Marine Fish :

  • Never leave fish in the sun in your car.
  • Switch off the aquarium lights.
  • Float fish bag in aquarium for a minimum of 20 minutes.
  • Open bag and add 5% of the volume of the bag with water from the aquarium, repeat every 5-8 minutes until the bag is about 90% full.
  • Catch the fish out of the bag and release them into your aquarium, discard the water in the bag.

Although this is not the ideal method it will certainly help to reduce stress to your new fish. The medication and methods below may be used in your home aquarium as well.

Ideally a small quarantine aquarium should be used to house the new fish for 7-10 days while been treated with:

  • General cure capsules or Oodi Medik to prevent introduction of parasites to your aquarium.
  • Melafix to prevent bacterial diseases such as Fin rot, Mouth rot, etc.
  • Pimafix to prevent fungal diseases.

Melafix and Pimafix are 100% natural and safe to mix and to use with inverts.

Alternatively use an Ultraviolet Sterilizer in your aquarium filtration if you do not want to use the medication.

  • Immno Vital to prevent future problems
  • EM tablets , Fin & Coat Care, Stress Coat for stress and burst blood vessels on there fins.

Seemingly healthy fish can often carry dormant Bacteria or Parasites so any stress can result in an outbreak of disease. This is why these procedures are so important for the health of your whole aquarium.

Stress is the major cause of fish diseases.

Stress and/or shock cause the protective slime coat on the fishes body to break down leaving them prone to attack from bacteria and parasites.

Causes of stress and shock:

  • Sudden temperature change
  • Banging or knocking on the aquarium or transport bag
  • Sudden bright light
  • Introduction of incompatible fish in the aquarium
  • Gravel and rocks that is not suitable for salt water.

To be able to maintain and keep a healthy aquarium one needs to be sensitive to there fishes needs. Fish are delicate living beings and require proper care and attention. Its best to use top quality branded products that have been researched, tried and tested to give your fish the best possible chance of survival.

Nitrate Reducer (Natural bacteria that consumes nitrates, this saves you the task of doing water changes. Another option is a denitrifying filter)

Phosphate Remover (natural bacteria that consumes phosphates)

Tap Water Purifier or Reverse Osmosis (For preparing salt water or for topping up of evaporated water. It prevents the introduction of nitrates, phosphates etc. in your aquarium)

Essential Maintenance to be done:

  • TEST your aquarium water weekly (especially for PH, Nitrate, Nitrite, Oxygen, Phosphate, etc. Checking water parameters is most essentials as marines are more sensitive to change than freshwater fish)
  • Replace Trace Elements and Vitamins as they are quickly used up by the fish, inverts, plants and bacteria in your filters.

Hope these helpful hints help you to enjoy your Marine Aquarium .
